DDoS protection

DDoS protection on every IP, always on

Every IP address on every FlexDedi server sits behind always-on filtering at the edge of our network. It is included in the price, with nothing to enable or configure.

Highlights

Always on

Filtering runs continuously rather than after an attack is detected, so there is no switch-over when one starts.

At the network edge

Attack traffic is filtered where it enters our network, before it can reach your server's port.

Included on every IP

No add-on and no separate plan: every IP address on every server is covered at no extra cost.

No bandwidth bill from attacks

Traffic is unmetered on every server, so an attack can never turn into overage fees.

How it works

DDoS protection, step by step.

  1. 1

    Traffic reaches our edge

All traffic to your IP addresses enters the FlexDedi network at its edge.

  2. 2

    Floods are filtered

Attack traffic is filtered there, before it can congest your server's port.

  3. 3

    Clean traffic is delivered

Legitimate traffic continues to your server as usual.

  4. 4

    Your firewall does the rest

Your host firewall and application-level limits handle what only your application can recognize.

In detail

What you should know.

01

What edge filtering covers, and what it doesn't

Network-level DDoS attacks try to exhaust bandwidth or connection state: UDP floods, reflection and amplification attacks that abuse open DNS, NTP or memcached servers, and SYN floods. These are the attacks edge filtering is built for, because they have to be stopped before they reach a single server's port.

Application-layer attacks are different. An HTTP flood that sends valid-looking requests, or a bot hammering a login page, can look like ordinary traffic at the network level. Plan for those in your own stack:

  • Rate limiting in NGINX, HAProxy or your API gateway.
  • Caching, so expensive pages are not rebuilt for every request.
  • A CDN or web application firewall in front of public web applications that are frequent targets.

If you see unusual traffic or degraded service, open a support ticket, 24/7, with the affected IP and a time window.

02

Harden your server behind the filter

DDoS protection works best on a server that exposes as little as possible. A short checklist:

  • Default-deny firewall: with nftables or ufw, allow only the ports you serve, and restrict SSH, RCON, databases and admin panels to your own addresses or the private network.
  • Don't become an amplifier: never expose open DNS resolvers, NTP monlist, memcached or SSDP to the internet. Misconfigured services are what attackers use against others, and our acceptable use policy applies.
  • Kernel settings: keep SYN cookies enabled (net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1, the Linux default) and size connection tracking for your peak traffic.
  • Application limits: cap connections and requests per client IP in your web server or game server.

For game servers and other UDP services, also restrict query ports and keep server software updated, since protocol-level bugs can be exploited with very little traffic.

FAQ

DDoS protection, answered.

Do I need to enable DDoS protection?

No. It is always on for every IP address on every server, with nothing to activate or configure. It is included in the monthly price at no extra cost.

Is attack traffic billed?

No. Traffic is unmetered on every FlexDedi server, inbound and outbound, with no overage fees. An attack does not change your bill.

Does it protect against application-layer attacks?

Edge filtering targets network-level floods such as UDP, reflection and SYN attacks. Requests that look legitimate, such as an HTTP flood against a login page, need application-level defenses: rate limiting, caching and, for frequent targets, a CDN or web application firewall in front.

Is it included for game servers?

Yes. Every IP on every server is covered, including the Core 16 and Core 16X servers used for game hosting. Keep a host firewall in place and restrict admin ports such as RCON to your own addresses.
