Out-of-band access
Every server comes with IPMI and an HTML5 KVM console that work independently of the operating system. Fix a broken network configuration, watch a boot or install a custom ISO from your browser.
See the server's screen and use its keyboard in your browser, from power-on to the login prompt, with no Java or plugins.
Power on, power off, reset or power-cycle the server with standard IPMI tools, whatever state the OS is in.
Attach an installer ISO through the KVM console to install any operating system that isn't in the one-click library.
Out-of-band access goes through the server's management controller, so it works when SSH, the network configuration or the OS itself is broken.
How it works
Find the IPMI credentials for each server in the control panel.
Launch the HTML5 KVM console in your browser, or use ipmitool for power and sensor commands.
Edit configuration at the local console, boot an older kernel, or attach an ISO and reinstall.
Log out when you are done, and keep the credentials in a password manager.
In detail
Out-of-band access is often the difference between a quick fix and a full reinstall. It runs through the server's baseboard management controller (BMC), a separate controller on the mainboard, so it doesn't depend on your OS or its network configuration. Typical situations:
Power commands work from the command line too. With the credentials from the panel and the password in the IPMI_PASSWORD variable, ipmitool -I lanplus -H BMC_IP -U USER -E chassis power status reports the power state, and chassis power cycle restarts a hung server.
IPMI credentials are as powerful as physical access: whoever holds them can power-cycle the server, watch the console and boot other media. Treat them like root credentials:
ipmitool -E, rather than on the command line where other users can see it.Also make sure the local console is usable when you need it. SSH keys don't help at a console login prompt, so keep a user with a strong local password and sudo rights, and know how to reach your boot loader's menu. Test this once while the server is healthy, not during an outage. The IPMI and KVM documentation explains how to connect and mount ISOs.

FAQ
Yes. Every FlexDedi server includes IPMI and an HTML5 KVM console at no extra cost. The credentials are available in the control panel.
No. The KVM console is HTML5 and runs in a current web browser. You get the server's screen and keyboard from power-on, including the boot menu.
Yes. Any custom ISO can be booted through the KVM console, so you can install systems that aren't in the one-click library, such as FreeBSD or NixOS. The installer runs exactly as it would on a local machine.
Open the KVM console, log in locally and revert the rule; out-of-band access doesn't depend on your server's network configuration. If you can't log in, boot rescue mode from the panel and fix the configuration from there.
